This piece was built around Seamus O’Rourke’s poem, and I’m delighted and honored that he allowed me to imagine music for it. This arrangement was put together for a show with Seamus, and singer songwriter Fiona Maria Fitzpatrick, in Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim in 2017. I felt the sentiments expressed, and commentary on complicated relationships with Fathers, echoed that of ‘A Dad’s Song’. I found it fascinating that two fathers, from the same part of Ireland but with very different backgrounds could have so much in common, from the perspective of a Son.
The Reel towards the end of the track is called ‘The Egg in the Croc’. I named it to commemorate the time my friend Willy Barrett dropped half a dozen eggs on his foot whilst wearing Crocs, and how even when it was thought to be completely cleaned up, more raw egg lurked with in.
