This song came at me out of the blue whilst I was trying to write something much more lighthearted, about something else. I have found the whole ‘Child abuse in the Catholic church’ scandal utterly bewildering. I was raised Catholic and went to a Church school. I can’t make sense of it. I’m just ‘Betrayed’.
The song was recorded live in one take, after many, many attempts.
The montage at the end includes the most powerful and honest testimony to one man’s suffering I’ve ever heard.
lyrics
Peace be with you
Have a care
Please be gentle and please play fair.
Was that too much to ask of you?
I can't understand the things you do.
But if you hold on to me, I'll keep you from Jumping
And I'll try to hold back the tide
Because we're out in open water without a hope in hell
You knew we wouldn't listen so you didn't try to tell
we followed them blindly and now we find
I can see you, I see straight through you and beyond
you broke your magic wand with the rights you wronged
I can't forgive you Father, if what they say of you is true
Earthbound men of money and power you
now we all search high and low
Who'd have guessed that you were playing hide and go seek
For the nations forgotten Daughters and Sons
who tried to run for cover as you reloaded your guns
We're out in open water without a hope in hell and you just pull together boys
And I don't see you. I can't see through you
I don't see you, I can't see through you
I'm just Betrayed, I'm Betrayed, Betrayed
Here's a Church, here's a steeple
You lied, You tricked and you preyed on the the people.
