This Seamus O’Rourke Poem has a special place in my heart. It was through this piece that I first got to meet and work with Seamus. I’d been going through a phase of learning long poems and sections of prose, as a kind of memory test. Possibly as a brain exercise, to help ward off dementia, and keep me from the same fate as my Dad. I came across Seamus’s poem when my friend Mick Mulvey shared it on social media. I loved it and learned it, and eventually Joe, Caz and I began gigging a version of it. I noticed people making videos of us at Gigs and thought it might be polite to contact Seamus and let him know what we were doing with his work.
I was amazed and delighted when he came back to me to say he really liked a recording I’d sent him of it, and he invited me out to Ireland to work on a show with him and Fiona Maria Fitzpatrick It was one of the most unusual and beautiful times of my life.
